a good day

i haven't had too many days in the last year when i felt i could truly relax and forget my responsibilities for a little while. consequently, i don't always know how to answer people who ask me "how are you doing?" there's a measure of frustration and joy in each day. but yesterday was one of those infrequent days and this morning i think i can honestly say i'm feeling good.

you should stop by Rosane's blog (link to the right)for a few pictures of some art that we saw with two of her friends. two art concepts struck me at the Nasher Sculpture Museum in Dallas struck me last night. one was the creative representation of landscape we saw on the lower level. the artist had looked at various landscapes and reduced them down to the basic lines and sillouets. he had then created a few sculptures that represented that same concept. i think this is one aspect of more modern art that i've learned to appreciate. there is often an exageration of detail that reveals some aspect that might be missed in the whole.

the other concept was a six-foot stack of thin metal bars. at a distance or from an angle it looked like a strange interconnecting web. when viewed from the front or a bit closer though you realized that the bars were arranged in such a way that they concentrated in the center in the form of a human. i think Rosane has a picture that i'll ask her for as it's so hard to describe. what i appreciated about that piece in particular was the thought of pattern found in seeming chaos. i need to quote L'Engle on art here, but i can't quite remember her quote that reflects this theme. remind me if i don't add it later.

so, a day with art thoughts, good people, a good friend, some good conversation and some good food. Yeah, that's a good day.

I had a great time yesterday too. I love good days like that, I wish they happened more often. :)

I was thinking about that sculpture last night and how I DID NOT take a picture of it! I guess I only asked if I was allowed to photograph after we had gone past it. Maybe I'll have to go back just to get it because I looked through their whole website and didn't find a picture of it!
